2017 Commonwealth Youth Games in Bahamas
Starting Tue 18 Jul, 2017
Ending Sun 23 Jul, 2017
International

Eleven young swimmers departed Auckland today to represent New Zealand at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Bahamas from July 18th – 23rd. The Games will be Bahama's first-ever international multi-sport event and the largest-ever edition of the Youth Games with up to 1300 athletes competing.

The athletes spent last night enjoying a number of team bonding activities and together created a team mission statement.

In our team we will have happiness, fun, family and enjoyment. We will represent our country and ourselves with pride and respect. We will trust our processes and support each other. We believe we will win and have success in the pool. We will challenge ourselves and take a good experience away from our adventure.

Australian based swimmer Laticia-Leigh Transom is looking forward to getting to know her new Kiwi team mates better over the next 12 days with an eye on the future.

"It's always hard going into a new environment, being based in Brisbane, but we're all here to win gold for New Zealand and you never know, we may also be going to senior meets in the future together," says Transom.

It’s been a busy first half of the year for this group of young swimmers. The 11 swimmers combined for 13 medals at the NZ Open Championships, 42 medals at the New Zealand Age Group Championships and five at the Australian Age Group Championships.

Lewis Clareburt won 8 gold medals and broke two national age group records at this year’s New Zealand Age Group Championships. Mya Rasmussen will also be one to watch. Rasmussen smashed her own 400m individual medley age group record at the same championships in a time that would have seen her win gold at the NZ Open Championships.

The last Commonwealth Youth Games were held in Samoa in 2015, with the swimmers bringing home ten of the twenty medals won by the entire New Zealand team, five of them gold. The swimming squad will be apart of the 34 strong New Zealand team at the games competing in five different sports including athletics, cycling, boxing and beach volleyball.

Swimming New Zealand will have up to date results of our Kiwi swimmers posted on our website and social media throughout the Bahamas 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games.
